Master of Arts in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching program at Mississippi Valley State University works hard to develop academically rigorous programs that produce educators and school leaders who model high academic, moral, and spiritual standards before their peers. The MVSU M.A.T program is designed to develop your understanding of best practices in the classroom. You’ll engage in critical and innovative thinking to consistently base decisions on research and reflection. Additionally, you will advance your knowledge through active learning, problem-solving, and exploration.

Requirements:

For admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching Degree Program, applicants must:

  1.  *Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution;
  2.  *Have left the last college or university attended in good standing;
  3. Present evidence, by an official transcript, of a minimum grade point average of 3.00 (University) or 3.00 (Mississippi Department of Education) on all undergraduate study on a 4.0 GPA system;
  4. Twenty-one (21) ACT (or SAT equivalent) or;
  5. Present Praxis Core (Professional Skills Test - PPST) scores that meet Mississippi Certification requirements for all subjects or;
  6. Minimum GPA of 3.00 on a minimum of 60 hours of course credits as established by the State Board of Education and;
  7. Present PRAXIS II (Specialty Area Test) scores that meet Mississippi Certification requirements in the content area required and;
  8. Foundation of Reading Assessment (applicable to Elementary Education (4-6) only: https://www.ms.nesinc.com/)
  9. Applicants must Submit three letters of recommendation which include: A. Professional qualifications B. Potential for success as a classroom teacher C. Potential for program completion.
  10. Applicants must also:
  • Demonstrate writing ability. All applicants are required to submit a two-page (minimum), computer-generated self-created essay on their philosophy of education and why they wish to pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching Degree.

Note: *These must be on file to qualify for conditional admission. Applicants are responsible for securing their own transcripts, even from Mississippi Valley State University.
